@julian digesting this. The potential is every bit as exciting as I thought it would be 6 months ago. I feel like my life has come full circle. I have always been a fan of forums, and always felt they were completely underdeveloped. It’s like everybody cloned the phpbb model and that was as far as it ever went. You’re reawakening a real beast potential.

@julian @box464 Question can be used as an activity instead of as an object. Mastodon's usage wraps it in a Create, so you could maybe just not do that.

When projects decide to 'bend' designs in their favor and implement non-compliant mechanisms, they're taking a calculated risk.

The next project faces a similar decision. Follow the leader (post-facto interop), custom mechanism (ad-hoc interop), or follow a standards proces and eventual open standards compliance (FEP --> W3C)?

With protocol decay & tech debt imho biggest challenge of the Fediverse, I'd advocate the latter. Stimulate interop as intended. Non-compliance gets sidelined.

@[email protected] looks like all that's really needed is to add the mention class. It bothers me a bit because it's a functionally useless class for me, but I suppose it isn't strictly a mastodonism.

I decided against adding microdata only because we already use Schema.org in NodeBB, so adopting a separate standard (even if they're mutually exclusive) would be a larger decision than one I want to make right now.

@julian yes exactly that. You already have the solution!

You can the. decide if you want to list avatars and names or avatars only or have a second click on the pop up “show usernames” but tucking it away solves the overall issue nicely.

@julian Yeah, this is my assumption as well. There's very little you can do to force this matter, and there's a lot of complexity in preventing server software from revealing this, so it isn't something your software can assume.

You can make it easier to hide that information, you can make it easier to use proxies etc, but you can't expect the software to do this for you. Installed software simply operates at the wrong level for that.

I was wondering what Mastodon used to generate their unique IDs, but I didn't wonder so much to actually look into it haha.

We use UUIDv4 whenever we need something random generated, but something lexicographically (ULIDs) or numerically (snowflake) sortable might be handy...

/world contains topics from users that you explicitly follow. You probably don't see any topics there because you don't follow any users, or the ones you do haven't posted anything yet

@crazycells you're passing the naked url which is not correct. You have to run it through encodeURIComponent() before using it as an url fragment

Quick update: you are now able to mention individual users in your posts, and if you are mentioned in return, you will now be notified.

There was also a bug where remote user avatars were not showing up in your notification inbox. That has now been rectified.

@[email protected] Thanks for the reply, I'm glad these discussions are taking place.

I independently settled on the approach advocated in that link you shared — given any Note ID, I traverse up the chain until I find the root, and that becomes the original topic post.

If there were some sort of standard for defining a topic ID, I would use that, although I think at present there are no consistent applications.

FEP-400e explicitly mentions forum topics, but I am not entirely certain whether this is something I'd want to follow as topic themselves don't have an "owner".

@The-SkyFoxx nope, as federation was enabled for this forum, all users are automatically federating their content out (at least for the categories I've manually enabled federation on).

That tells me I should probably do a write-up on how this all works currently, in NodeBB.
